Moth Night at Rancocas Cranberry Preserve
Join Pinelands Adventures for an evening exploration of the night life of the Pine Barrens at Rancocas Cranberry Preserve!
As the sun sets and the forest darkens, a hidden world of moths, beetles, and other nocturnal insects emerges. With the help of special lights and sheets, we’ll attract and observe a dazzling array of moth species—many of which play vital roles as pollinators and as part of the food web that supports birds, bats, and other wildlife. We will also use UV lights to spot caterpillars along the trails. Local experts and other naturalists will share insights into moth ecology, the importance of native plants as host species, and the surprising diversity that thrives after dark in the Pinelands.
Participants will gather outdoors at this former cranberry bog, now a unique ecotone where wetlands meet uplands in the Pines—creating rich habitat for moths and a wide variety of nocturnal wildlife.
