A 2‑Hour Paddle Through Classic Pine Barrens Beauty!

If you’re looking for a paddle with a little more punch, the Atsion to Lock’s Bridge trip is the perfect next step. This two‑hour journey takes you deep into the wild heart of the Mullica River — a winding, tea‑colored waterway surrounded by towering pines, lush wetlands, and classic Pine Barrens scenery. It’s gorgeous, it’s immersive, and yes… it can absolutely keep you on your toes.

Trip length: 3 miles

Although many beginners choose this trip because of its short duration, this is not a good route for beginners due to many sharp turns in the first part of the journey. Beginners should choose the “Shorty“!  You may also consider our 4-hour Batsto River trip from Quaker Bridge to Batsto Lake.

A Scenic Start Through Cedar Forest

Your adventure begins at Atsion, where the river is narrow, shady, and full of character. The current can move swiftly here, and the twists and tight corners make this stretch exciting for paddlers who enjoy a bit of challenge. You’ll wind through dense cedar forest, slipping under branches and around bends as the river guides you deeper into the Pinelands.

Twists, Turns & True Adventure

This route offers a lively mix of quick maneuvers, shifting water, and moments where teamwork (or good steering!) really pays off. The riverbanks are lined with sweet pepperbush, blueberry shrubs, and tall pines, creating a wild, immersive corridor that feels like a true backcountry adventure.

Along the way, stay alert for:

  • Turtles sunning on sandy edges
  • Herons lifting off into the trees
  • Beaver lodges tucked into quiet coves
  • Swallows darting past as you round a tight bend

It’s the kind of route that keeps you engaged from start to finish.

The Perfect Finish: Lock’s Bridge

As you approach the final stretch, the river opens into sweeping views of wetlands framed by pines and cedars. After navigating the twists upstream, this broad, open section feels like a reward — a chance to drift, breathe, and take in the beauty around you.

Your paddle concludes at Lock’s Bridge, where a sandy landing welcomes you back to shore with that satisfying “we did it” feeling.

Why Paddlers Love This Route

  • A more adventurous challenge than the Shorty
  • Stunning, varied scenery from forested twists to wide‑open wetlands
  • Active, engaging paddling that’s incredibly fun
  • A true immersion in the spirit of the Pine Barrens

This is the trip for anyone craving something a little wilder, a little more dynamic, and absolutely unforgettable.
