Our best choice for beginners on the Mullica River, the “Shorty,” follows the same path as our Atsion to Lock’s Bridge trip while cutting off the difficult 1st mile. This 1.5 to 2 hour trip begins along a gentle winding river and then opens to the beaver pond where you’ll see beaver lodges, turtles, birds, and unique carnivorous plants! Trip length: 2 miles
In Detail
After a 10 min bus ride down Quaker Bridge Road, begin your paddle at First Beach, Mile Marker 1 on the Mullica River. Wind your way through the shady, narrow, forested river channel lined with sweet pepperbush, blueberry shrubs and blue flag iris. After the first mile, be rewarded with stunning views as the river opens up into the Mullica Beaver Pond. Relax and drift past basking turtles, water lilies, darting lake swallows, and admire the work of the resident beavers as you follow the channel through the wet meadows.
Enjoy the panorama as the sky meets upland pitch pine forests, hardwood swamps, Atlantic White Cedars reflecting on the pond. Your paddle ends at a sandy beach; Locks Bridge, Mullica Mile 3. This trip offers a little bit of everything for the novice Pinelands paddler in a shorter amount of time!
There are plenty of places to stop for a break along the river’s edge

Please note: while this trip is among the best for inexperienced paddlers, all of our trips can pose some challenges due to river conditions and a participant’s ability. All paddlers must be age 6 or older to go on a trip or use our equipment during a rental.
