Welcome to the Mullica River
Flowing through the heart of the Pine Barrens, the Mullica River is famous for its peaceful atmosphere, rich wildlife, and signature “cedar water” — a warm tea‑colored tint created naturally by local pine and cedar forests. This part of the river winds through protected woodlands, giving you a front‑row seat to one of New Jersey’s most unique ecosystems.
It’s calm, it’s scenic, and it’s the kind of place where beginners instantly feel at ease.

There are plenty of places to stop for a break along the river’s edge

See Beaver Lodges, Beaver Dams, Pine Barrens Turtles, Birds, and Unique Carnivorous Plants!
The Shorty Experience
Your adventure starts with a quick 10‑minute bus ride down Quaker Bridge Road. You’ll launch at First Beach (Mile Marker 1), where the river is narrow, shady, and wonderfully gentle — perfect for easing into your paddle strokes.
From there, you’ll float past:
- Sweet pepperbush and blueberry shrubs
- Blue flag iris blooming along the banks
- Tall pines arching overhead
- A quiet, winding channel that feels worlds away from everyday life
After the first mile, the river opens into the stunning Mullica Beaver Pond. Here, the sky widens, the sunlight dances on the water, and wildlife becomes the star of the show. Expect to see:
- Basking turtles
- Beaver lodges and dams
- Water lilies floating in calm water
- Swallows darting overhead
- Lush wet meadows filled with unique plant life
Framed by upland pitch pines, hardwood swamps, and stands of Atlantic White Cedar, the Beaver Pond is a true Pine Barrens panorama.
Your trip wraps up at a sandy landing at Lock’s Bridge (Mullica Mile 3) — the perfect spot to relax, snap a few photos, and pat yourself on the back for completing your adventure.
Please note: while this trip is among the best for inexperienced paddlers, all of our trips can pose some challenges due to river conditions and a participant’s ability. All paddlers must be age 6 or older to go on a trip or use our equipment during a rental.
