Mullica River: Headwaters to Bay
A magnificent humpback whale breaches off the Jersey coast, lured in by an abundance of krill and small oceanic fish. A crowd of enthusiastic whale watchers smile in delight with cell phones held high. Meanwhile, a tiny drop of water is percolating through the sphagnum moss in a remote cedar swamp deep in the pine barrens. This trip is an ecological journey from the Mullica River’s humble origins in the Pine Barrens to its grand confluence with the ocean.
Participants will witness lakes and ponds created by past industries and their waters that have been reclaimed by nature. They will see riparian habitats, bogs, and swamps along the way as the river twists and bends into a tidal estuarine ecosystem. Finally, participants will see the Mullica pour out into the majestic Great Bay.
