Batsto River Furnace and Forge Run
The challenging upper reaches of the Batsto River will be explored by kayak. We begin our adventure at Hampton Furnace, one of many iron producers during the early 1800s, which later became Hampton Park, reflecting the transition to cranberry culture. We’ll stop and walk on the Central Railroad of New Jersey line and visualize the Blue Comet roaring toward Atlantic City. Cedar swamps and uplands will be explored on our way to the Lower Forge, where Mr. Richards made iron products to be shipped downriver. Our six-mile sojourn through the Piney past and ecological present concludes at Quaker Bridge. Experienced Paddlers Only.
